Henry Joseph Kurdelski
September 23, 1941 – July 17, 2025
Henry Joseph Kurdelski, affectionately known as “Kinky” to many and “Kurdy” to his childhood friends, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2025, in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, at the age of 84.
Born on September 23, 1941, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Henry was the beloved son of Henry Charles and Josephine Violet Kurdelski. As a child, he was known for his adventurous spirit, inquisitive nature, bright blue eyes, and curly hair. He enjoyed outdoor activities, especially ice hockey and skiing—two passions that would shape the course of his life.
In 1963, Henry was drafted into the U.S. Army and deployed to West Germany the following year. Thanks to his skiing expertise, he was stationed in Berchtesgaden as a ski patroller and later served as a ski instructor for the military.
Following his discharge in 1966, Henry chose to remain in Germany and dedicated his life to serving U.S. military personnel and their families. He worked for nearly six decades with the Armed Forces Recreation Center in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where he served as Golf Course Superintendent, Ski Instructor, and Mountain Guide.
His commitment and service left a lasting impression on generations of service members and locals alike.
Known affectionately as "Kinky" in the Garmisch community—a nickname inspired by his curly hair—Henry was loved for his generosity, humor, and unwavering kindness.
Henry was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Charles and Josephine Violet Kurdelski. He is survived by his sister, Marcia, and her husband, Steve, of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
His legacy of warmth, service, and joy will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A Celebration of Life/Open House will be held at the American Hausberg Lodge in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on August 15, 2025, at 4:00 PM.
